A complete new design of double-wishbone suspension incorporating twin spring-damper units is used on the front axle.
"The new front suspension geometry has significantly improved the handling”, says Technical Director Eduard Weidl. The rear suspension, which fundamentally follows the same principle of operation, could be retained.
In parallel to this Volkswagen developed a new steering system. "The kick-back described by the drivers was simulated in test-bench runs. We were able to reduce these forces significantly thanks to the modified geometry and new steering”, says Weidl.
The dampers supplied by new partner ZF Sachs, and fitted to the Volkswagen Race Touareg since May 2006, have excelled. Additional work covered the transmission. The differentials are set-up differently and the gear ratios in the six-speed gearbox have been further optimised.
